In Sierra Leone, like most of Sub-Sahara, malaria accounts for a larger disease burden and lower economic growth. Though we can continue to highlight the effects of malaria; one child death in every 30 seconds in the world, 48 (forty-eight) per cent of the total outpatient morbidity in Sierra Leone, 60% childhood hospital referrals, and a national mortality as high as 30% reported cases, our imperative should be the reversal of such disturbing statistics.
Although there has been great progress in establishing action most of it is yet unfulfilled. With little resources, lack of participation and an increased lack of both drugs and nets for prevention, little has been done to meet the goals of World Health Organization's and the Abuja Declaration. For example, the country is far from promoting the 'proportion of children under five sleeping under mosquito nets to 60% by 2010'.
An integrated approach of prevention and treatment has proven to be a successful intervention strategy and records show that overall under-five mortality was reduced by about 20% with the introduction of Insecticide Treated Bed nets (ITNs) and it is with this backdrop that we want to promote the use of Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) which both protects people using it and those in the same room.
Furthermore 'Control of Malaria' came 4th on a list of 17 global challenges at Copenhagen Consensus conference 2004, where some of the worlds leading experts were asked to determine where best to spend money in solving the world's issues. This again proves that Malaria is not only easy to prevent, but that for a considerably small amount of money one can do a considerably big amount of good.
