Malaria is not a disease of today.
Yet it still keeps crippling major parts of the developing world, and works as a big barrier for progress and development.
Malaria is a flue like disease that spreads through mosquitoes. For the infected person, if not treated, the disease can in some situations be lethal. The treatment is relatively simple and is, seen from a western point of view, very cheap. However, the easiest and cheapest way to fight malaria is by preventative methods; ensuring that people don't get infected in the first place.
Malaria is often considered to be just as damaging as HIV/AIDS. Nonetheless since Malaria is nonexistent outside the tropical region, the disease gets only a fraction of the media attention that HIV/AIDS gets.
In opposition to for instance HIV/AIDS, Malaria is unbelievably simple to fight, and it is therefore tragic that malaria each year is cause to the death of more than 1 million children in the developing world, as well as hundreds of millions who gets crippled or handicapped for life. It is estimated that 400 million people get the disease every single year. The far majority of these in the sub-Saharan region.
GMin Eradicate Malaria project tries to solve this problem. Our project aims at fighting malaria through the use of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (LLIN's), which in addition to preventing mosquitos physically from reaching the individual person also has a preventative effect due to the special treatment which repels the mosquitoes.
The project will be carried out in July-August 2009, and here on this page you can find more information about what we are exactly intending to do, how we are doing it and who is doing it.
