Past projects

We’ve done two “Eradicate Malaria” projects so far. Here’s a bit about each of them.

Eradicate Malaria ’07

This was our first project. It took place in Sahn Malen, Sierra Leone.

We distributed 1,200 nets – enough to cover everyone in the entire village, not just the children. We went from house to house, distributing the nets. This gave us an opportunity to talk to everyone individually and answer any questions they may have.

Being GMin’s first projects, there were a few flaws in our execution, but the overall approach was extremely successful nonetheless. Feedback shows a 93% usage rate of the nets. This is a quite remarkable figure and was the reason we decided to do another project based on the same approach.

Eradicate Malaria ’09

Having learned some invaluable lessons from our ’07 project and getting back very impressive results, we decided to scale up.

Long story short, we ended up distributing 4,000 nets across 20 small villages. We used the same approach in ’07 with a few improvements. We added a small play that we enacted in front of the entire village, communicating the dangers of malaria and importance of nets in a way that went through to everyone (even the children).

We also spent a lot of energy learning how to ask our 20-or-so questions in the local tongue. This is a great way to connect and shows that you’re making an effort.
